Imagery is a way of refining and organizing a natural process, just as one can refine one’s thoughts and emotions to serve you better. The most common form of imagery is “worry.” In Mental Imagery, we turn this natural, innate process to your advantage, putting you in more control of your mind . . . and your life. Imagery is the language that allows your mind to directly affect your body.
Most people think of Mental Imagery as “seeing the ball going where you want it to.” Imagery is so much more than that. However, learning to imagine (see, hear, sense, touch, smell) the ball going exactly where you want it to is essential. Some people can easily “see” the ball going where they want it to. Others “sense” the flight of the ball as a trail or track of energy. If you are saying to yourself, “Don’t hit the ball into the lake,” you are going to hit the ball into the lake, because you have set up imagery about the lake, rather than where you want the ball to go. Your body will always cooperate with the imagery your mind has set in motion. When you're thinking about “not hitting into the late,” the lake is all that your mind is imaging or visualizing. And so, the lake is where the ball will end up.
Visualizing success, one swing at a time, or one tournament at a time, is elementary school Mental Imagery.
